ADMISISIONS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • When do I make an application for a place into Year 7?
If you child attends a state primary school, you will automatically be prompted to cast your preferences of secondary school as they enter Year 6. If they are in an independent school you will need to contact your home local authority for a Common Application Form to do this. If you are seeking a boarding place, you will also need to complete and return the Boarding Supplementary Form supplied by the College and return it to us. The deadline for all these forms is 31st October the year preceeding entry.
  • For Day place application, how far do you reach on proximity?"
This distance changes every year, largely due to the number of siblings joining us. Over the last 10 years, the furthest we have reached has been 3.8 miles but for several years the distance reached has been far less.
  • Can I apply for Day and Boarding at the same time?
Yes. The only thing to remember is that you must be careful to order them the way you want, e.g. if a day place is what you really want, make sure to give it a higher preference than that for the boarding place.
  • Does my child have to sit an entrance examination?
No. Wymondham College is not academically selective.
  • Do you offer any Scholarships?
We offer Boarding Scholarships at Sixth Form for achievement in sport, music or for academic excellence and thes carry a part bursary. From 2018 entry, we shall only offer Priority Places for an aptitude in Music. These do not confer any other benefit than priority for a place at the College. These places apply to both Day and Boarding candidates.
  • Do you offer flexi-boarding?
Not formally. However, in practice several of our boarders live relatively locally and they can choose to return home after lessons on a Saturday until Sunday night/ Monday morning.
  • Are you able to offer any help with boarding fees?
Other than the Sixth Form Scholarships, the College does not offer any bursaries. However, we can put you in touch with a range of educational trusts and charities who may be able to help. Please contact the Admissions Office for further information, (01953 609014, admissions@wymondhamcollege.org).
  • What are the timings of the school day?
Day students can arrive from 8.15am for Registration at 8.30am. The teaching day ends at 3.45pm and students are welcome to stay on site until 5.15pm to attend Wymondham Life activities and spend time with their friends. The full daily college routine can be found under the about us tab.
  • What is the difference between Day, Day Boarding and Enhanced Day Boarding?"
In overview, Day students can be at College from 8.15am to 5.15pm. Payment of the Main School Day charge, (currently £26.75 per week), entitles the student to refreshments at morning break, lunch and use of the boarding house facilities downstairs. Day Boarders can come to the College at 7.30am, take breakfast and have the usual school day. They may stay later to have tea and complete their prep in House alongside the boarders. Day Boarders will leave at the end of prep time for their Year group. Enhanced Day Boarders receive all the benefits of a Day Boarder and in addition, can take advantage of using a room upstairs in the boarding house (and using ablutions). The room is provided on the basis that there is space in the boarding house and is at the discretion of the Head of House. The student must leave the boarding house by 9pm and must not under any circumstances stay overnight in the room. Equally they do not have access to a wardrobe nor store any items at the College in the room. Please speak to the Admissions Team for a full information sheet.
  • Do you admit students into Years other than Year 7 and Sixth Form?
Yes. The College also has a formal intake of boarders at Year 9. We are able to consider applications for other Years and, if vacancies exist, offer places in accordance with our Admissions Policy.
