GOVERNING BODY PROFILES
Mr Philip Norton - Chairman
“A former Partner at Hansells, I am now a Consultant for Private Client and Charity Law at the firm. I am a Trustee of both Wymondham College Trust and some well established local charities, some with a medical and others with an educational emphasis. I also advise charities both locally and nationally on legal and governance matters. I have a daughter who is a day student at Wymondham College.”
Mr Peter Rout
“I have four children, all of whom have been educated at Wymondham College I became a Parent Governor of the College in 1994 starting what has become a long and rewarding time on the Governing Body. I am proud to be a chairman of a forward-looking organisation that continues to flourish in the ever changing world of education.”
Mrs Elizabeth Lewis-Williams - Safeguarding Governor
A teacher and poet, Elizabeth has spent most of the last 26 years involved in education. She has taught English and Drama in a variety of different schools, state and independent, day and boarding, in this country and abroad, and was Head of English at Town Close before returning to university (UEA) where she is currently studying for a Creative Critical PhD. She has three children at the College.
Mr Adrian Underwood OBE
“I have been involved in education and boarding schools for over forty-five years, having been a housemaster and a head of department and, for twenty-two years I was Headmaster of a senior independent boarding and day school. From 1998-2006 I was the National Director of the Boarding Schools’ Association. I have been a Lead Inspector for the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate and the Education Development Trust for over fifteen years and I am still inspecting and acting as a consultant to a range of schools.”
Mr Jonathan Taylor - Executive Principal/CEO
Jonathan has been Principal of Wymondham College in Norfolk since September 2014.
He was educated at The Leys School Cambridge, Cambridge and at the University of Oxford (Brasenose College) where he was awarded an Open Exhibition and graduated with a Masters Degree in Theology.
Following work as a Head of Department and Head of Year, he took up his first senior leadership post at De Aston School, Market Rasen. He then was promoted to Deputy Head at Toot Hill School, Bingham, before his appointment as Vice-CEO of the Torch Academy Gateway Trust.
Jonathan is a National Leader of Education and serves on the Executive Group of Norfolk Secondary Education Leaders and is an executive member of the state boarding forum.
Mr Dan Browning - Head of School
Prior to taking up appointment as Head of School at Wymondham College, Dan was Executive Principal leading King Richard and St John’s Schools for the UK Ministry of Defence which served the families in British Forces Cyprus.

Mr Joe Walpole
Joe is married with two children, both of whom attend the College. He has spent the last twenty years working as a Project / Programme Manager with businesses ranging from large internationals to small local firms, across multiple industries, delivering mainly ICT projects / programmes. Joe was heavily involved with the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme and has an active personal and professional interest to see ICT excellence in education establishments. Joe’s wife is Vice- Chair of the Parent Staff Association. Joe and his wife are proud to be part of the team at Wymondham College, and look forward to many years productively contributing to the excellent work of the College.
Mr Karl Sandall, FCIB QFP
“A professional UK and International Franchisor since 2000 after a 26 year banking career with Midland Bank/HSBC. Currently Group Chief Executive of The TaxAssist Direct Group of companies, a Trustee of the British Franchise Association Charity Trust. Previously a school governor with a local primary school, Round Tabler and supporter of Great Ormond Street hospital, British Olympic Appeal and The Prince’s Trust and many other charitable organisations. Two sons attend the College”
Mr Rob Fenton
Robert is a retired international project director with a wealth of broad management experience. Now a part time teacher of maths to small groups throughout Suffolk and Norfolk, he sees his main role as supporting and challenging the college’s leadership team such that all pupils are taught, cared for and can achieve their school ambitions in a safe and enriching environment. An experienced governor and mentor, he has two girls who board at the college. He undertakes voluntary work for Norfolk and country-wide organisations.
Mr James Foster, MBA, Dip Con
“I work in NHS primary care after a career in private industry and the media. I formerly ran the editorial team in Archant Norfolk, including the EDP and Evening News. I have particular interest in using technology and training to improve working practices. I am passionate about ensuring all our young people have great life opportunities and am proud of the tradition of the College in offering this to its pupils. I am proud to offer any help I can to help the school become even better. My son is a boarder.”
Mr Seamus Rigney
Seamus is married with three children. He joined Wymondham College in 2010 as Head of Design Technology, having started his career at Sexey’s School in Bruton and has been involved in boarding all his teaching life. Throughout his career he has had a variety of different responsibilities, as Housemaster, Higher Education Coordinator and Sixth Form PSHE Coordinator. His wife Alison teaches part time at the College and his two younger children are at Wicklewood Primary School.
Mr Andrew Gardiner
Having graduated from the College in 1983 Andrew is officially an Old Wymondhamian. He gained a degree in Computer Science at York then returned to Norwich, spending 20 years supporting FE and HE computer and electronics education, before moving to the College as Senior Science Technician in 2006. Outside the College Andrew’s personal interests are wide and varied, from astronomy to entomology, and some inevitably spill over into College extra-curricular activities from time to time.
As Support Staff Governor, Andrew primarily represents the views of all non-teaching employees of Wymondham College however he also brings a significant depth of personal knowledge and experience to the Local Governing Body.
