ADMISISIONS - HOW TO APPLY

GUIDE TO THE TRANSFER TO SECONDARY SCHOOL AT YEAR 7

BOARDING PLACE

September preceding year of entry - All Local Authorities in England provide year 6 students in maintained schools with a Common Application Form (CAF). This must be completed by parents and returned to their home Local Authority by 31 October. This can also be completed online. If the child attends an Independent School parent(s)/ carers(s) have to contact their home Local Authority for a CAF. If the family live elsewhere in the UK or overseas, this does not apply.

Parents/Carers also complete a year 7 Main School Boarding application form and return it by 31 October.

Parents/Carers who wish for their child to participate in the year 7 Music Priority Specialist places also complete the relevant form and return it to the College by 31 October.

  • Application is acknowledged.

  • The College contacts the candidate's current school for a boarding reference.

  • Candidate invited to come to the College for a boarding interview (usually end November.

  • If candidate has applied for a Sport and/or Music Priority Boarding place, they are invited to come for the assessment, EITHER in October or November.

Prior to Christmas - The College writes to the family to advise whether or not we deem the candidate suitable to board. If we think they are unsuitable, we will give the reasons why.

Application is acknowledged. Candidate invited to come to the College EITHER in October or November to participate in the assessment(s) for  Music Day places.

The College writes to all October participants to advise whether or not they have reached the required benchmark.

1 March - The candidate's home local authority advises the family at which school a place has been offered.

2 March - The College writes to all our successful Day candidates with an offer pack.

2 March - The College writes to all our successful boarding candidates with an offer pack.

We also write to any unsuccessful candidates with an explanation of what happens next.

If candidates are not offered a place at their preferred school(s) they are offered the right to appeal to an independent appeals panel.

Parents/carers complete a year 8-10 boarding application form and return it to the College by given closing date (closing dates are on the apply for a place page).

Parents/carers apply either via their home local authority or directly to the College.

  • Application is acknowledged.

  • The College contacts the candidate's current schools for a boarding reference.

  • Candidate invited to come to the College for a boarding interview, usually end November.

  • Prior to Christmas - The College writes to the family either with an offer or explanation of current position and next steps.

If a vacancy exists, place given in accordance with our our subscription criteria as published in the Admissions policy.

If no vacancies exist the College will advise the family of their right to appeal.

No further action or appal heard with 30 school days.

Waiting lists for Day places are not maintained by the College or local authorities.

  • Spring Term - Admissions usually make further round(s) of offers and/or write to candidate's family with right of Appeal.

The College holds all applications on file in case of further vacancies, until the end of the academic year in which entry was sought.

GUIDE TO SIXTH FORM APPLICATIONS (EXTERNAL CANDIDATES)

BOARDING PLACE

Parents/carers and Candidate complete a Sixth Form Boarding application form and return it to the College by given closing date (closing dates are on the apply for a place page).

Candidates can apply for both boarding AND day places. Applications are treated entirely separately and processed according to the below sequence.

  • Application is acknowledged.

  • The College contacts the candidate's current school for a boarding reference and predicted GCSE grades (or equivalent).

  • Application is acknowledged.

  • The College contacts the candidate's current school for a boarding reference and predicted GCSE grades (or equivalent).

Prior to Christmas - Candidate invited to come to the College for a boarding interview, (in mid-January). If the candidate has applied for a Music or Academic scholarship, they are invited to come for the assessment(s) at the same time. Please see the Sixth form scholarship page.

End January - First round of offers are issued and update letters are sent to all unsuccessful candidates.

Spring Term Onwards - The College continues to monitor acceptances and fallout and makes further round of offers as appropriate.

Just before Easter any unsuccessful candidates are given details of their right to appeal.

Early February - First round of offers are issued in accordance with our admissions policy and update letters are sent to all unsuccessful candidates. Any candidates receiving both boarding and day offers given a deadline by which to choose the status they wish to enter Sixth Form.
